2016 Is Tokhang In Itself: Continues Killing Spree On Christmas

Even without the extrajudicial killings or drug war-related killings under President Rodrigo Duterte, the year 2016 is already a “tokhang” in itself.

People woke up today learning that yet another pop icon George Michael has died, aged 53. It effectively made the bleak 2016 much bleaker, not even a single joy on Christmas Day, with the co-singer of “Last Christmas” dying on Christmas Day itself.

He is just one of the very, very long string of celebrity deaths this year. And as one Tweeter commented, would take Oscars and Grammys 3 hours for their “In Memoriam” segment.

Or as one Filipino friend blurted out, it’s like historian Ambeth Ocampo dying on December 30, Rizal Day.

It comes on a day after fears of Carrie Fisher dying after suffering a heart attack on a flight to Los Angeles, California. As of writing she’s reported to be in stable condition.

Just in the past days, his song “Last Christmas” has already been subject to memes, like this:

Surely 2016 is an annus horribilis for music industry, with yet another musician death prior – not just musician, but MUSICIANS, yes, musicians. I mean ENTIRE CHOIR. The Alexandrov Ensemble, the official choir of the Russian Army, was wiped out in the plane crash in Sochi this weekend, and they are due to have a concert for the Russian troops in Syria.

The ensemble has been singing since the 1920s and has performed tours in many places, including those during the Second World War.

Just last November, the Chapecoense soccer team was virtually decimated when their chartered plane crashed in Colombia. Only six survived of the 77 people survived, including three team members. Human error is being eyed as the cause.

Seeing two plane crashes decimating a group in a span of a month is already crazy. Well let’s think, if we could seriously consider splitting the group into several flights as convenient as we could. And the concern falls to the T.S.C. on protecting boys choirs on tours.

Enough, the summary for this year is death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death, death. Lots of deaths. Celebrity deaths. Friend deaths. Deaths in Syria and Iraq. Drug-related and extra-judicial killings in the Philippines. So many that the Sawyerean word for the year is “kiramyo”, which means ‘condolence’.

As this abominable year is on its last week, people are already bracing on who’s to come next. Hopefully, the new year hopes to be a better year.
